Lake Erie Monsters head coach
Before the puck drops on training camp on Wednesday, head coach Dean Chynoweth and returning players David van der Gulik and Daniel Maggio met with media on Tuesday to preview the upcoming season.
David van der Gulik, 30, is longest-tenured Monsters player, entering his fourth season with the team in 2013-14. Over the past three seasons, the 2006 Boston University grad has split time between Lake Erie and NHL parent club Colorado. van der Gulik has recorded 45 goals and 54 assists in 148 games with the Monsters and two goals and nine assists in 40 games with the Avalanche. On the Monsters all-time franchise leader list, van der Gulik is second in goals, tied for second in assists and third in overall points.
Daniel Maggio, 22, joined the Monsters with two-plus months to go in the 2012-13 season and quickly became the team’s new “enforcer.” He racked up 110 penalty minutes in 25 games last season, plus added a goal and three assists. Prior to joining the Monsters in February, Maggio played 43 games with Fort Wayne of the ECHL, recording five goals, 13 assists and 147 penalty minutes. He had spent the previous five seasons in the OHL (Canadian junior hockey).
